Ofcom functions as an independent regulator and competition authority for the
UK communications industries, with responsibilities ranging from television, radio, telecommunications, and
wireless communications services. With regard to UWB technology, the company is suggesting that it be
free from license restrictions, if assurances can be made by manufacturers and developers that UWB-enabled devices will
not cause interference problems with other mobile technologies such as 3G phones and wireless broadband.
Ofcom’s proposals are part of Europe-wide discussions on the subject of UWB. In April, the European Commission will
consider work on identifying a harmonized approach to UWB across the union. [The Ultra Wideband Weblog]
