The Sundance Film Festival saw the premiere of Rize, directed by
David LaChapelle, which not only
made news because of its subject matter and the director’s antics, but also got attention because it was first feature
film ever to be delivered via wireless technology. The movie was projected on the big screen via a WiMax connection
provided by Intel (who else?) from an encrypted file originating in Hillsboro, Oregon. It was then streamed to Salt
Lake City, and then beamed from the top of a 10,000-foot mountain in Park City to the theater via microwave. A receiver
at the ski lodge sent the file to an HP Media Center PC, where it was decoded and projected through a high-end digital
projector.
